An Experimental Study of Palatogram in relatin to Palatal Plate Thickness

Abstract
Using Chin¢¥s classification of palatograms, the author has made a comparision of 8 different Korean mono-syllabic sounds that are paired according to phonetic types. They are: type C/t-}, r}/, type H /z}, 1}/, type U /71, a}/ and type V /4}, o}/ which occur most frequently. Five different palatal plates of 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, 2.5 mm and 3.0 non in thickness were applied to 5 male and 5 female subjects.
Comparative observations were made while the subjects were asked to pronounce those sounds. The results from this study permit the following conclusions:
1) Types C, H and V have a tendency to increase the plate contact area in proportion to the thickness of the experimental palatal plate, whereas type U shows no differences.
2) There are little variations of total surface area that can be related to the palatal plate thickness. However, an exception is observed in typ. H, of which syllable /4}/ shows a notable increase.
3) With the palatal plate thickness of 2.0 nun and 2. 5 mm variations of the subject contact area are generally irregular.
4) Since little variations exist with 1. 0 mm and 1. 5 mm of plate thickness, these values are considered ideal for construction of the denture plate.
